Tai Tapu
Historic landmarks, scenic landscapes,
and a warm village spirit
Just a short drive from Christchurch, Tai Tapu is one of Canterbury’s oldest settlements, its story woven into the region’s early colonial history. At its heart stand two treasured landmarks gifted by Sir Heaton Rhodes: the striking stone church and the much-loved library, both enduring symbols of community and generosity. Together with the village’s leafy streets and riverside setting, they offer a glimpse into the character and heritage that have shaped Tai Tapu for generations.
Today, Tai Tapu balances this proud history with an inviting mix of modern amenities and attractions. Visitors can enjoy locally inspired dining at cafés and restaurants, sample regional wines, or relax in boutique accommodation surrounded by rolling countryside. Just beyond the village are unique sculpture parks, picturesque golf courses, and scenic walking routes, making Tai Tapu not only a place of heritage, but also a destination for art, leisure, and recreation.

St Pauls Anglican Church
St Paul’s Anglican Church is one of Tai Tapu’s most cherished landmarks, a handsome stone building gifted to the community by Sir Heaton Rhodes in the early 20th century. Set among established trees at the edge of the village, the church reflects the enduring link between Tai Tapu’s rural heritage and its strong sense of community. Built in a traditional style, it carries a sense of quiet dignity, its stonework and proportions echoing the English parish churches that inspired its design, yet firmly grounded in Canterbury’s landscape.
Inside, St Paul’s is notable for its warm timber interior and simple, graceful detailing, which create an atmosphere of peace and reflection. Light filters gently through its stained glass windows, each telling stories of faith and remembrance, while the carefully preserved furnishings highlight the care with which it has been maintained. More than just a place of worship, the church remains a focal point for the community—hosting services, weddings, and events that continue to bind the village together and connect past and present

Tai Tapu Library
Tai Tapu Library is a distinctive red-stone building with a proud history, gifted to the community in 1932 by Sir Heaton Rhodes. Designed by architect Cecil Wood in the Arts & Crafts style, it was built using stone quarried from the nearby Otahuna estate and features a welcoming tiled porch, a gabled roof with a graceful fleche, and a cosy fireplace inside. The library has long stood as both a local landmark and a testament to community spirit, lovingly maintained by volunteers and cherished by generations of readers.
Today, Tai Tapu Library continues to serve as a warm and welcoming hub for locals. As part of the Selwyn Libraries network, it offers access to a wide catalogue of books and resources, while retaining its intimate village charm. The library is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 2 pm to 4 pm, and on Saturdays from 10 am to 12 pm—making it a convenient and inviting stop for anyone seeking a good book, a quiet browse, or a glimpse into Tai Tapu’s living history.
